New Mexico Drought Conditions
Regional conditions affecting water availability and demand
Last updated: loading live data…
What do these water conditions mean?
Temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, humidity, soil moisture, and wind all influence water availability and demand. Together, these indicators help show whether conditions are favorable, warrant attention, or may place additional stress on surface water and groundwater resources across New Mexico.
Why is it important?
Hot, dry, and windy conditions can increase evaporation and water demand, while rainfall and higher soil moisture may temporarily reduce stress on water supplies.
What does the data represent?
Statewide values summarize nine representative locations. Regional values summarize three representative locations within the selected region using current modeled weather conditions.
What are the limitations?
These are screening-level modeled averages, not official station observations. Local conditions can vary, especially in mountainous areas and locations far from the representative points.

Data Sources and Notes: The drought map is provided by the U.S. Drought Monitor and is updated weekly. Temperature, forecast precipitation, reference evapotranspiration, relative humidity, shallow soil moisture, and wind speed are modeled values from Open-Meteo. Statewide values use nine representative locations, while regional values use three representative locations. These metrics are intended as screening-level indicators and should not be interpreted as official climatological statistics.
